Vijaypat Singhania, the former Chairman of Raymond Group and a towering figure in India’s textile industry, has passed away at the age of 87 in Mumbai. His death was confirmed by family members on Saturday, marking the end of an era for one of the country’s most respected business leaders.
Announcing the loss, his son Gautam Singhania, who currently serves as Chairman and Managing Director of Raymond Group, shared an emotional message on social media platform X. He described his father as a “visionary leader, philanthropist, and an inspiring personality,” adding that his legacy would continue to influence and guide future generations.

According to the family, Vijaypat Singhania will be laid to rest at Chandanwadi crematorium in Mumbai on Sunday afternoon. He is survived by his wife Ashadevi Singhania and his children Madhupati Singhania, Shephali Ruia, and Gautam Singhania.
Born on October 4, 1938, vijaypat singhania was widely regarded as one of the key architects behind Raymond Group’s rise as a dominant force in India’s textile and apparel sector. He took over the leadership of the company in 1980 and played a transformative role in expanding its reach, modernizing operations, and building a strong brand identity. Under his stewardship, Raymond became synonymous with quality menswear and established itself as a trusted name not only in India but also in international markets.
During his two-decade tenure as chairman, vijaypat singhania focused on innovation, operational excellence, and global expansion. His leadership helped the company evolve from a traditional textile manufacturer into a diversified lifestyle brand. His contributions were instrumental in shaping the modern face of India’s fashion and textile industry.
In 2000, after successfully leading the company for 20 years, vijaypat singhania stepped down and handed over the reins to his son Gautam. Demonstrating confidence in the next generation, he also transferred a significant 37 percent stake in the company to him, ensuring continuity in leadership.

Beyond business, vijaypat singhania was known for his adventurous spirit and remarkable achievements in aviation. He was a passionate aviator and set a world record for the highest altitude reached in a hot air balloon, further cementing his reputation as a pioneer in multiple fields. In recognition of his contributions to industry and society, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan in 2006, one of India’s highest civilian awards.
Despite his towering achievements, vijaypat singhania’s later years were marked by a prolonged legal dispute with his son Gautam. The disagreement, which began in 2015, attracted significant public attention. However, the family reconciled in 2024, bringing closure to a difficult chapter and restoring harmony before his passing.
