Strict Action Taken Following Complaints by Junior Doctors
The Bhavnagar Ragging Case has led to major disciplinary action at Sir T Hospital and Government Medical College in Bhavnagar, where six senior medical students have been found guilty of ragging junior students. Following an extensive inquiry by the institution’s Anti-Ragging Committee, the accused students have been suspended for periods ranging from six months to two years.
The decision came after a marathon committee meeting that lasted nearly eight and a half hours, during which statements were recorded from complainants, accused students, faculty members, and hospital staff. Based on the findings, the committee concluded that the allegations were substantiated and warranted strict disciplinary measures.
Suspensions Range From Six Months to Two Years
According to the college administration, the six students found responsible for ragging have been barred from all academic, clinical, and hospital-related activities during their suspension period. They have also been instructed to vacate their hostel accommodation immediately.
The disciplinary action includes a two-year suspension for one student, one-year suspensions for three students, and six-month suspensions for two others. College authorities have also initiated the process of filing a police complaint against the students involved, indicating that the matter may now move beyond institutional disciplinary action into the legal domain.
Dean Says Fair Hearing Was Given to All Parties
Medical College Dean Dr. Chinmay Shah described the decision as a difficult but necessary step. He stated that the committee began deliberations in the evening and continued until the early hours of the morning to ensure that every aspect of the case was thoroughly examined.
According to the dean, both the complainants and the accused were given multiple opportunities to present their side of the story. The committee carefully reviewed witness statements and documentary evidence before reaching its final conclusion.
He emphasized that the institution was committed to ensuring that no innocent student was punished while also taking firm action against those found responsible.
Complaint Filed by 13 First-Year Students
The controversy began when 13 first-year students from the Orthopedics Department submitted a formal complaint against six second-year senior students. The complainants alleged that they were subjected to repeated harassment and humiliation by their seniors.
Among the allegations were claims that juniors were forced into degrading activities, pressured to arrange money, and subjected to behavior intended to intimidate and control them. Following the complaint, the Anti-Ragging Squad launched an investigation that eventually led to the committee’s disciplinary proceedings.
Disturbing Allegations Surface During Investigation
During the inquiry, several junior doctors reportedly described a pattern of severe harassment inside the hospital’s trauma center building. The allegations painted a troubling picture of the treatment allegedly meted out by senior students.
The complainants claimed they were subjected to humiliating punishments, denied adequate rest, restricted in their movement, and forced to follow unreasonable instructions. Some students alleged they were not allowed proper meal breaks, were prevented from sleeping normally, and faced repeated intimidation over extended periods.
Additional claims included being made to remain standing for long durations and being denied basic personal comfort and freedom. The students said they eventually gathered the courage to submit a written complaint after enduring the alleged harassment for weeks.
Institution Reaffirms Zero-Tolerance Policy
The Bhavnagar Ragging Case has once again highlighted concerns about ragging in educational institutions, particularly in professional colleges where students often live and work in close-knit environments. Anti-ragging regulations across India prohibit any form of physical, mental, or emotional harassment of students and provide for strict disciplinary and legal consequences.
College authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment. The administration stated that strong action was necessary to protect students and reinforce the institution’s zero-tolerance stance toward ragging.
With police action now being pursued, the case is expected to remain under close scrutiny as authorities continue to examine the allegations and ensure accountability.
