Passport Police Verification: Passport applicants in Gujarat will no longer have to make unnecessary trips to a police station for verification. The Gujarat Police has issued important instructions to simplify the verification process and reduce the inconvenience faced by citizens while applying for or obtaining a passport.
The new guidelines are aimed at making the Passport Police Verification process more convenient and straightforward. Under the revised procedure, applicants will generally not be required to appear personally at a police station for verification. Police verification will now primarily focus on checking the applicant’s citizenship and criminal history.
The decision is expected to provide significant relief to people applying for a fresh passport as well as those going through the passport process for other reasons.
Passport Police Verification Will Not Require a Police Station Visit
According to the Gujarat Police, passport applicants should not be unnecessarily called to a police station for the verification process. The police will conduct the required checks without requiring the applicant to appear in person or provide a signature at the police station.
The revised process is intended to make passport verification less complicated for ordinary citizens. Instead of asking applicants to visit the police station, officials will concentrate on the specific information required for the verification.
The Gujarat Police has clarified that the verification will mainly cover the applicant’s citizenship status and criminal history. This means that a routine passport verification should not involve a personal visit by the applicant to the police station.
What Will Police Check During Passport Verification?
Under the clarified procedure, police verification will focus on the applicant’s citizenship and whether there is any relevant criminal history.
Police will also not be required to conduct a separate address verification as a routine part of the process. Similarly, the applicant does not need to be personally present before police officials merely for the purpose of completing the verification or signing documents.
This change is expected to reduce unnecessary paperwork and repeated visits while allowing the police to complete the verification required for passport processing.
Police Can Visit the Applicant’s Residence in Exceptional Cases
While routine applicants will not need to visit a police station, there is an important exception.
If police officials find something suspicious about an applicant or discover information that requires additional verification, they may visit the applicant’s residence. Such a visit would be limited to exceptional cases where further verification is considered necessary.
However, even in such circumstances, the applicant cannot be called to the police station simply for passport verification. The police are expected to carry out the required inquiry at the applicant’s residence instead.
This provision is intended to ensure that genuine concerns can still be investigated while preventing unnecessary inconvenience to applicants who have no issues in their background.
Gujarat DGP Issues Clarification on Passport Verification
Gujarat Police Director General G.S. Malik has clarified several points for the police department with the objective of making the passport application and verification process more streamlined across the state.
The DGP office said that administrative changes have been clarified so that citizens do not face unnecessary difficulties during passport verification.
The clarification specifically addresses the requirement for applicants to appear personally at police stations. Under the revised approach, police stations should not call passport applicants merely for completing the verification process.
The move is expected to make the process more citizen-friendly and reduce the need for applicants to spend time travelling to police stations.
No Signature or Personal Appearance Required for Routine Verification
One of the important changes concerns the applicant’s physical presence and signature.
For routine Passport Police Verification, applicants will not be required to personally meet police officials or sign documents at the police station. Police officials will conduct the necessary checks based on the information available to them.
If a case requires further investigation because of suspicious information or a criminal background, police may conduct additional verification. Even then, the applicant does not have to be called to the police station.
The objective is to ensure that the verification process remains focused on genuine security and background checks rather than creating unnecessary formalities for citizens.
Passport Fee Increased From July 1, 2026
Along with the changes in the police verification process, passport applicants also need to be aware of changes in passport fees.
The cost of applying for or renewing a passport has increased. According to the notification issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, the revised passport fee structure came into effect from July 1, 2026.
The new charges apply to passport applications and renewals, with the fee depending on factors such as the type of passport service and the number of pages.
Applicants choosing passports with different page capacities, including 36-page and 60-page passports, will have to pay according to the revised fee structure.
The increase in passport fees means applicants should check the applicable charges before submitting a new application or applying for passport renewal.
What the New Passport Verification Rules Mean for Applicants
The latest decision by the Gujarat Police is mainly aimed at reducing unnecessary visits and making the verification process easier for citizens.
Under the clarified system, a normal applicant should not be asked to visit a police station simply because a passport verification is pending. Police will verify the required details, including citizenship and criminal history, through the available process.
Only cases requiring additional investigation may involve a visit to the applicant’s residence. Even in such cases, the applicant should not be summoned to the police station for verification.
For passport applicants in Gujarat, the change could make the overall process more convenient and reduce the time and effort traditionally associated with police verification. At the same time, the police will continue to investigate cases where there are genuine concerns or suspicious circumstances.
