Jharkhand Students Protest: Rahul Gandhi Urges Hemant Soren to Meet Students and Address Their Demands

The Jharkhand students protest over alleged irregularities in state recruitment examinations has drawn political attention, with Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi urging Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren to personally meet the protesting students and listen to their concerns.
In a letter dated August 14, 2026, Rahul Gandhi appealed to Soren to engage directly with representatives of the students and take appropriate steps to address their pending demands. The students have been holding protests over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted in the state.
Rahul Gandhi Writes to Hemant Soren Over Jharkhand Students Protest
Rahul Gandhi said that the right to hold peaceful protests is an important constitutional principle and one of the foundations of a democratic society. According to him, students should be allowed to raise genuine concerns and their grievances should be heard through dialogue.
The Congress leader said his party has been supporting students who have been raising concerns about alleged paper leaks and irregularities in the education and examination system over the past several months.
Referring specifically to the situation in Jharkhand, Rahul Gandhi said students were peacefully protesting against alleged irregularities in state recruitment examinations. He described their concerns as legitimate and welcomed the state government’s move to form a committee to communicate with the students.
However, he pointed out that the protest had not ended and that some students were continuing an indefinite hunger strike.

Rahul Gandhi Asks Hemant Soren to Meet Student Representatives
In his letter, Rahul Gandhi urged Chief Minister Hemant Soren to personally meet representatives of the protesting students.
He said a direct meeting between the chief minister and the students could help build confidence and demonstrate that the state government was serious about resolving their concerns. Rahul Gandhi also stressed that listening directly to the affected students could help the government better understand the issues surrounding the recruitment examinations.
The Congress leader concluded his appeal by describing India’s youth as the future of the country. He said young people need support during difficult situations and urged the Jharkhand government to listen to their complaints and take suitable action to resolve the matter.
Rahul Gandhi Criticises RSS and BJP Influence on Education
Rahul Gandhi also used the issue to criticise what he described as the influence of the RSS and BJP on India’s education system.
He alleged that under their influence, the education system had increasingly become a source of pressure for students instead of serving as a strong foundation for knowledge and opportunity.
These comments came in the broader context of student protests over examinations, recruitment processes and alleged irregularities. Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly raised examination-related issues as a political concern, arguing that failures in the system can have a serious impact on students who spend years preparing for competitive examinations.
Rahul Gandhi Targets Centre and NTA Over UGC-NET Exam Cancellation
The Jharkhand students protest also comes against the backdrop of wider concerns over competitive examinations in India.
Rahul Gandhi had earlier criticised the central government and the National Testing Agency (NTA) after UGC-NET examinations in three subjects — Sociology, English and Commerce — were cancelled.
According to the details cited by Rahul Gandhi, the examinations were held between June 22 and June 30 but were cancelled nearly two months later following concerns over serious issues with the question papers, including the alleged repetition of older questions.
He argued that students were being forced to bear the consequences of problems within the examination system. Students who had spent years preparing for the examination, paid the required fees and travelled to examination centres, including centres located far from their homes, were faced with the possibility of repeating the entire process.
Rahul Gandhi questioned why students should have to suffer because of alleged mistakes made by the examination authorities.
Rahul Gandhi Questions NTA’s Accountability
Criticising the functioning of the examination system, Rahul Gandhi alleged that repeated problems were costing students their time, money, confidence and emotional well-being.
He also questioned whether examination papers had been compromised before the tests and asked why, according to him, a clear explanation had not been provided.
Rahul Gandhi further alleged that institutions responsible for conducting examinations often avoid accepting responsibility when mistakes occur. He argued that accountability should be fixed at the appropriate level whenever serious irregularities affect students.
He also raised questions about responsibility within the NTA and said senior officials should face accountability if serious failures are established.
“The Students Are Not at Fault,” Rahul Gandhi Says
Addressing students who have been asked to appear for examinations again, Rahul Gandhi said they should not consider themselves responsible for the problems they are facing.
His message was that the responsibility lies with the system and the authorities managing the examination process, rather than with students who have spent months or years preparing for competitive examinations.
He also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government over what he described as failures in conducting examinations properly. Rahul Gandhi argued that students should not be blamed when administrative or examination-related problems disrupt their careers.

Jharkhand Students Protest Puts Recruitment Process Under Focus
The ongoing Jharkhand students protest has once again brought the issue of recruitment examinations and the concerns of job aspirants into public focus.
For students preparing for government jobs, recruitment examinations are often the result of years of preparation. Any allegation of paper leaks, irregularities, delays or procedural mistakes can therefore have a major impact on candidates.
Rahul Gandhi‘s letter to Hemant Soren has added a political dimension to the ongoing protest. His request for a direct meeting between the chief minister and student representatives is aimed at encouraging dialogue and finding a solution to the issues raised by the protesters.
The immediate focus now remains on how the Jharkhand government responds to the students’ demands and whether direct discussions with their representatives can help bring the protest to an end.
For the protesting students, the central issue remains clear: they want their concerns over recruitment examinations to be heard and addressed, while seeking a fair and transparent process for candidates who have invested significant time and effort in preparing for government jobs.
