June 22: The monsoon in Gujarat has gathered momentum after several regions across the state received significant rainfall on Sunday morning, bringing relief from persistent heat but also causing waterlogging and disruption in several urban and rural areas. Weather authorities have issued heavy rain alerts for parts of South Gujarat, while the central government has warned of rough sea conditions along the Gujarat coast over the next five days.
After a delayed onset this year, rainfall activity has strengthened in districts including Surat, Valsad, Navsari, Tapi, and Amreli. The increased precipitation is expected to support agricultural activities that had been affected by the slow progress of the monsoon season.
Heavy Rainfall Recorded Across 29 Talukas
According to rainfall data collected between 6 a.m. and 12 noon, precipitation was reported in 29 talukas across Gujarat. Surat district’s Umarpada taluka recorded the highest rainfall at 1.77 inches during the six-hour period.

Waterlogging Causes Disruptions in Surat and Valsad
The fresh spell of rainfall has brought welcome relief from soaring temperatures, but it has also exposed infrastructure challenges in some cities.
In Surat, several low-lying areas witnessed water accumulation following intense showers. Commuters faced difficulties as roads became partially submerged, slowing traffic movement and affecting daily routines. Residents in vulnerable areas reported challenges navigating flooded stretches during peak morning hours.
Similar conditions were observed in Valsad, where heavy rainfall led to waterlogging at key locations. A railway underpass connecting important routes in the district was affected by accumulated rainwater, creating inconvenience for students, office-goers, and motorists.
Local authorities have been monitoring the situation and are expected to continue drainage and emergency response operations in affected areas.
Weather Department Issues Orange and Yellow Alerts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall activity across several parts of Gujarat. An Orange Alert has been issued for districts including Surat, Tapi, Navsari, Dang, Valsad, Daman, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, where heavy rainfall is expected.
Meanwhile, a Yellow Alert has been announced for Gir Somnath, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Botad, Bharuch, Vadodara, Panchmahal, Dahod, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, and Diu. These districts may experience light to moderate showers accompanied by localized thunderstorms.
Meteorologists believe that favorable atmospheric conditions over western India are supporting the ongoing rainfall activity, and intermittent showers are likely to continue over the coming days.

Rough Sea Conditions Expected Along Gujarat Coast
Alongside the rainfall forecast, authorities have also raised concerns about deteriorating conditions in the Arabian Sea.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued an advisory for the period between June 22 and June 27, warning of strong winds and rough seas along India’s western coastline. Gujarat is among the states expected to be affected by these conditions.
Weather agencies have indicated that wind speeds over the Arabian Sea may range between 40 and 55 kmph, with gusts potentially reaching 60 to 65 kmph in some areas. Such conditions can generate high waves, strong currents, and hazardous situations for marine activities.
Fishermen Advised Not to Venture into the Sea
Given the expected rough weather, authorities have strongly advised fishermen operating along the Gujarat coast to avoid venturing into the sea until conditions improve. Fishing communities have been asked to remain at safe coastal locations and follow updates issued by local administrations and weather agencies.
The advisory is aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring the safety of thousands of fishermen who depend on the Arabian Sea for their livelihood.
