Surat Airport Emergency Alert: Distress Signal From Azerbaijan-Registered Aircraft Triggers High Alert

Emergency response activated after satellite alert near Daman; flight operations at Surat Airport remain unaffected

A Surat Airport Emergency Alert was issued on Friday after authorities received a satellite-based distress signal believed to have originated from an Azerbaijan-registered aircraft over the Arabian Sea near Daman. The alert prompted an immediate emergency response at Surat International Airport, with rescue and security agencies placed on standby while officials assessed the situation.

Although the distress signal triggered extensive precautionary measures, airport authorities later confirmed that flight operations at Surat Airport continued as normal and no disruption was reported for passengers.

Distress signal detected through international satellite network

According to airport officials, the emergency notification was received by Surat Air Traffic Control (ATC) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The alert was transmitted by the aircraft’s Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT), a device designed to automatically send distress signals in the event of an emergency.

The signal was picked up through the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite system, an internationally used search-and-rescue network that helps locate aircraft, ships, and individuals in distress. Initial tracking data indicated that the alert originated from a maritime area near Daman along India’s western coastline.

Once the distress signal was received, airport authorities immediately initiated emergency protocols to prepare for any possible contingency, including the possibility of an emergency landing or search-and-rescue operation.

Surat Airport activates emergency response plan

Following the Surat Airport Emergency Alert, officials implemented the airport’s established Airport Emergency Plan (AEP) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Multiple emergency response teams were mobilized without delay, including:

  • Air Traffic Control personnel
  • CISF security units
  • Airport Fire and Rescue Services
  • Medical emergency teams
  • Ambulance services

Officials remained in contact with aviation agencies and airports across the country, but there were no reports of the Azerbaijan-registered aircraft making an emergency landing at any airport in India.

Based on the available information, investigators believe several possibilities remain open. The aircraft may have continued its journey after the alert, returned to its point of origin, or landed at an airport outside India. Officials have not released further operational details while the matter remains under assessment.

What is an Emergency Locator Transmitter?

An Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) is a safety device installed on aircraft to help search-and-rescue teams locate an aircraft during emergencies. It can activate automatically following a severe impact or be switched on manually by the crew. Once activated, the transmitter sends distress signals through satellite networks such as COSPAS-SARSAT, allowing rescue agencies to identify the aircraft’s approximate location and respond quickly.

Not every ELT activation indicates a crash or major accident. Aviation authorities generally treat every distress signal as a serious event until the aircraft’s safety is confirmed.

Authorities continue monitoring the situation
