Investigation Underway After Green Laser Beam Reported During Flight’s Final Approach
Surat Airport Laser Light Incident: A serious aviation safety concern has prompted an investigation at Surat International Airport after the crew of an IndiGo flight arriving from Delhi reported being targeted by a green laser beam while preparing to land. Preliminary information indicates that the Delhi–Surat IndiGo flight was approximately nine nautical miles from the runway threshold when the crew observed a powerful green laser beam. The light was reportedly seen around two nautical miles to the right of the aircraft’s extended centerline as it descended toward the airport.
Although the aircraft landed safely and no injuries or operational disruptions were reported, aviation authorities treated the incident as a significant safety matter. Even brief laser exposure can interfere with a pilot’s vision during landing, making such incidents a serious concern for aviation regulators worldwide.
Following the pilot’s report, airport authorities alerted the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which is responsible for airport security, along with local law enforcement agencies. A joint investigation was launched to determine the origin of the laser.
Search Focuses on Katargam Area
Initial technical assessments and coordination among security agencies suggested that the laser may have originated from the Katargam area of Surat. Based on this assessment, police teams conducted searches in several high-rise residential buildings in the locality in an effort to locate the device or identify those responsible.
Officials have not yet confirmed whether any individual has been detained or whether the laser equipment has been recovered. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities examine all available evidence.
Airport security officials emphasized that passenger safety remains their highest priority and warned that any activity capable of endangering aircraft operations will be dealt with under the law.
Similar Incident Reported Earlier This Year
This is not the first time such an event has raised concerns near Surat Airport.
In February, airport authorities reported another laser-related incident during the landing of an aircraft. In that case, the laser light was traced to a wedding celebration in the Dumas area, where decorative laser equipment was being used. After receiving information from airport authorities, local police intervened and instructed organizers to switch off the laser lights to prevent further interference with flight operations.
The recurrence of such incidents has highlighted the need for greater public awareness about the risks associated with using high-powered laser devices near airports.

Aviation experts say that the final minutes before landing are among the most demanding parts of any flight. During this phase, pilots rely heavily on clear visibility and constant focus while monitoring runway lights, cockpit instruments, and aircraft systems.

Officials have urged residents to avoid using high-intensity laser devices outdoors, especially in areas located beneath aircraft approach and departure paths. They also appealed to event organizers and building occupants to remain aware of aviation safety regulations.
