Ahmedabad Dholera Railway Line Approved: Travel Time to Drop to Just 45 Minutes

Ahmedabad Dholera Railway Line Approved: In a major push toward faster regional connectivity and infrastructure development in Gujarat, the Union Cabinet has approved the ambitious Ahmedabad Dholera Railway Line project. The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday.

The project involves the construction of a 134-kilometre double-line railway corridor connecting Ahmedabad and Dholera, one of India’s fastest-growing industrial regions. Once completed, the new semi-high-speed rail line is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities to less than an hour, with officials estimating journeys could take around 45 minutes.

Major Boost for Gujarat’s Infrastructure

The Ahmedabad Dholera Railway Line is being seen as a landmark transportation project for Gujarat and a significant step in India’s broader push toward modern rail infrastructure. According to government estimates, the project will cost around ₹20,667 crore and is targeted for completion by 2030-31.

The railway line will begin from Sarkhej in Ahmedabad and extend to Dholera, creating a direct high-speed rail connection to the upcoming industrial and investment zones in the region. The corridor is expected to play a crucial role in improving passenger movement, industrial logistics, and economic activity across central Gujarat.

Officials say the railway line will also strengthen connectivity with the upcoming Dholera International Airport and the proposed National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal, which is being developed as a major tourism and heritage destination.

Indigenous Technology at the Core

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw described the project as a symbol of “New India’s” modern and self-reliant transport vision. He said the semi-high-speed rail corridor would rely entirely on indigenous technology, making it one of the first major railway initiatives in the country built using domestically developed systems.

According to railway officials, the Ahmedabad Dholera Railway Line is not just a standalone corridor but could serve as a model for future semi-high-speed rail projects across India. The government aims to create a stronger rail network capable of supporting rapid urbanization, industrial growth, and efficient logistics.

Faster Travel and Better Connectivity

One of the biggest advantages of the project will be the drastic reduction in travel time between Ahmedabad and Dholera. At present, road journeys between the two locations can take several hours depending on traffic conditions. With the new rail line, commuters and business travelers are expected to benefit from quick same-day return travel.

The railway corridor will also integrate with the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, further strengthening Gujarat’s transportation network. Experts believe this connectivity could make Dholera a more attractive destination for investors, industries, and businesses looking for faster access to Ahmedabad and other major economic centers.

The Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR), which is being developed as one of India’s largest smart industrial cities, is expected to gain significantly from the project. Improved transport access is likely to support manufacturing, warehousing, logistics, and export-oriented industries in the region.

Economic and Employment Opportunities

Railway authorities believe the Ahmedabad Dholera Railway Line will generate substantial economic benefits for the region. Officials estimate that around 284 villages and nearly five lakh people could directly benefit from the project through better connectivity, employment opportunities, and industrial expansion.

Ahmedabad Division Divisional Railway Manager Ved Prakash stated that the project would provide a major boost to logistics infrastructure and create new employment opportunities during both the construction and operational phases.

Industry experts also expect the corridor to support real estate growth and commercial development around key railway stations and industrial clusters.

Environmental Benefits Also Highlighted

Apart from economic growth, the project is also being promoted as an environmentally sustainable initiative. According to Indian Railways, the semi-high-speed corridor could help save nearly 4.8 million litres of fuel every year.

Officials further estimate that the railway line may reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 20 million kilograms annually. Railway authorities compared the environmental impact to planting nearly one million trees.

The Ahmedabad Dholera Railway Line has been planned under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on improving multi-modal connectivity and enhancing logistics efficiency across India.

With approval now granted, the project marks another major milestone in Gujarat’s rapidly expanding infrastructure landscape and could reshape transportation and industrial development in the state over the coming decade.
