Special Summer Arrangements at Kankaria Zoo
As Ahmedabad continues to witness extreme summer temperatures crossing 40 degrees Celsius, Kankaria Zoo has introduced several measures to protect animals from the intense heatwave. Zoo authorities have installed air coolers, shade nets, and advanced cooling systems to ensure the comfort and safety of wildlife during the harsh summer season.
The zoo currently houses around 2,190 animals, birds, and reptiles. Officials said annual summer management plans are already in place, but additional precautions become necessary whenever temperatures rise sharply across the city.
Air Coolers Installed for Wild Animals
To reduce heat stress among animals, nearly 38 to 40 air coolers have been placed around the enclosures of lions, tigers, leopards, and elephants. Green shade nets and covered resting areas have also been arranged to protect animals from direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours.
Zoo officials said advanced technologies such as Earth Tube Heat Exchanger (ETHE) systems and geo-thermal aeration are being used for nocturnal animals. These systems help maintain cooler temperatures and proper airflow inside enclosed habitats, especially for species that are sensitive to excessive heat.
Veterinary Teams Monitoring Animal Health
Veterinary doctors and caretakers are closely monitoring animals to prevent dehydration and other heat-related illnesses. Regular medical check-ups, vaccinations, and deworming procedures are being carried out to maintain animal health during the summer months.
Animals are also receiving special summer diets that include watermelon, sugarcane, and other cooling fruits. In addition, glucose and ORS powder are being mixed into drinking water to help maintain hydration and electrolyte balance.
Zoo staff members are regularly cleaning enclosures and refilling water pools to improve hygiene and provide relief from the scorching temperatures.
Kankaria Zoo Continues to Attract Visitors
According to zoo authorities, more than 77.72 lakh people have visited Kankaria Zoo over the past five years, making it one of Ahmedabad’s most popular tourist attractions.
To improve visitor experience, work on a new walk-in aviary is currently underway, and new animal species are also expected to arrive in the coming months. The zoo administration has additionally introduced online ticket booking and guide services for the convenience of tourists.
Visitors Advised to Follow Heatwave Precautions
Officials said awareness boards and public guidance instructions have been placed across the zoo campus to help visitors during hot weather conditions. Tourists are being advised to stay hydrated, avoid unnecessary exposure to afternoon heat, and avoid disturbing animals, as many species become less active and more sensitive during extreme summer temperatures.
Authorities added that the summer protection measures are part of ongoing efforts to ensure the wellbeing of animals while maintaining safe and comfortable conditions for visitors at the zoo.
