Surat Rain Disaster Update: Surat continues to face severe disruption as relentless rainfall and rising river levels have created a challenging situation across the district. The administration has intensified emergency measures after heavy downpours caused flooding, damaged infrastructure, and increased the risk of further incidents. Rescue teams have been deployed in vulnerable areas, while officials have urged residents to remain cautious as more rain is expected over the coming days.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely on July 23 and 24. Weather conditions are expected to improve gradually after that, with rainfall intensity likely to decrease by July 27. Despite the forecast, authorities remain on alert as saturated ground and overflowing rivers continue to pose significant risks.
Heavy Rainfall Disrupts Daily Life Across Surat District
Over the past 24 hours, Surat district recorded an average rainfall of 3.79 inches, while the city received around 3.74 inches. Among all areas, Palsana taluka experienced the highest rainfall, measuring approximately 7.44 inches.
The continuous rain has affected transportation across several parts of the district. Officials have temporarily closed 44 rural roads due to waterlogging and safety concerns. To minimize inconvenience, alternative routes have been identified and opened wherever possible, allowing essential movement to continue while keeping motorists away from flooded stretches.
Local authorities have advised commuters to avoid unnecessary travel and remain updated through official weather and traffic advisories.
137 Residents Shifted to Safer Locations
As a precautionary measure, the district administration has safely evacuated 137 people from low-lying and vulnerable neighbourhoods threatened by flooding and structural hazards.
Emergency response teams have been positioned in sensitive locations, including Punagam, Sanjay Nagar, Bhestan, and Dindoli. Two teams each from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are carrying out monitoring, rescue preparedness, and public assistance operations.
The district disaster management department has appealed to residents to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid flooded roads, and contact the fire control room or emergency services if immediate assistance is required.
Tapi River Swells Beyond Danger Level
The situation has become more serious due to increased water released from upstream areas into the Tapi River. As a result, water levels have risen sharply, with the city’s weir-cum-causeway reaching 6.84 metres, well above its 6-metre danger level.
The causeway has been completely submerged, making it unsafe for traffic and forcing authorities to restrict access. Officials reported an outflow of nearly 52,000 cusecs, highlighting the strong river current and elevated flood risk.
Residents living near the riverbanks have been advised to remain alert and follow any evacuation or safety instructions issued by local authorities.
Dilapidated Buildings Collapse, Vehicles Damaged
The prolonged rainfall has also weakened several ageing structures across Surat. Authorities confirmed three separate building collapse incidents during the spell of heavy rain.
In Haripura, the rear portion of an unoccupied building collapsed, while another building near Zapa Bazaar suffered damage when its upper section gave way. In a separate incident, debris from a damaged structure fell onto three parked vehicles, causing property damage.
Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported in any of the incidents. Officials said emergency teams quickly secured the affected sites to prevent further danger.
Administration Urges Public to Remain Vigilant
With additional rainfall still forecast, the Surat administration is continuing round-the-clock monitoring of river levels, rainfall patterns, and vulnerable structures. Disaster response teams remain on standby to respond to emergencies, while civic authorities are working to clear waterlogged areas and restore normal movement wherever possible.
Residents are being encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from swollen rivers and flooded roads, and rely on official updates until weather conditions improve. As the monsoon remains active, preparedness and public cooperation will play a crucial role in ensuring safety across Surat.
