The Geographical Indication (GI) Registry has approved GI registration for the traditional Jasdan Patari handicraft for 2025-26, providing a major boost to craftsmen in the Jasdan region of Rajkot district.
The recognition is being celebrated by local artisans, many of whom have spent generations preserving this unique craft. The GI tag is expected to strengthen the identity of the product, protect its authenticity, and create new opportunities in domestic and international markets.
A Craft Rooted in Gujarat’s Heritage
Jasdan, located in Rajkot district, has long been known for producing beautifully handcrafted wooden chests called “Patari” or “Patara.” These traditional storage chests are typically made from durable teak wood and decorated with intricate metalwork, giving them a distinctive appearance that reflects the region’s cultural heritage.
Historically, Jasdan Pataris were an important part of Gujarati households. They were commonly used to store clothing, jewelry, valuable household items, and wedding trousseaus. In many families, these handcrafted chests were passed down through generations as treasured heirlooms.
The craftsmanship involved in creating a Patari requires considerable skill. Artisans carefully shape the wooden structure before embellishing it with decorative metal panels, traditionally made from brass and copper. In recent years, white metal has also become a popular material for decoration, while maintaining the traditional design elements that define the craft.

With Jasdan Patari Gets GI Tag, manufacturers outside the Jasdan region will no longer be able to market similar products as authentic Jasdan Patari. This protection is particularly important for local artisans who have often faced competition from cheaper imitations that undermine traditional craftsmanship.

The successful registration was supported by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) through its Rural Infrastructure and Development-related initiatives under the Gramya Vikas Nidhi (GVN) scheme.
NABARD provided financial assistance for activities such as documentation, awareness generation, research, and the preparation of the GI application. These efforts helped establish the historical significance, uniqueness, and geographical connection of the Jasdan Patari craft.
The registration process was carried out with the support of the Centre for Environment Education (CEE), which assisted in compiling the necessary documentation and facilitating the application process.
